William Shakespeare

William Shakespeare

1564–1616

A playwright, poet, and actor from Stratford-upon-Avon, he created characters and lines that have stayed alive for more than four centuries. His stories of love, ambition, jealousy, power, and forgiveness still feel startlingly human.

About the author

Born in Stratford-upon-Avon in 1564, William Shakespeare became one of the most influential writers in the English language. He worked as an actor and playwright in London during the late Elizabethan and early Jacobean years, and his career was closely tied to the King’s Men, one of the leading theatre companies of the time.

He is known for tragedies such as Hamlet, Othello, King Lear, and Macbeth; comedies including A Midsummer Night’s Dream and Twelfth Night; and histories such as Henry IV and Richard III. He also wrote 154 sonnets and other poems, and his writing helped shape the sound and vocabulary of English literature.

Even though many details of his personal life remain uncertain, the power of the work is not. The plays continue to be performed, adapted, studied, and rediscovered around the world, which is why Shakespeare is still often seen as the defining dramatist of the English tradition.
