About the author

Born in Stratford-upon-Avon in 1564, he became an actor, playwright, and poet whose work helped define English literature. He wrote comedies, tragedies, and histories, and his best-known plays include Hamlet, Macbeth, Romeo and Juliet, and King Lear.

He was closely connected with London’s theater world and wrote for the company known as the Lord Chamberlain’s Men, later the King’s Men. His work was admired in his own time, but its influence only grew after his death in 1616, shaping theater, storytelling, and even everyday English.

Even when details of his personal life remain uncertain, the writing itself has kept him endlessly present. His plays move easily from wit to heartbreak, from public spectacle to private doubt, which is one reason they still invite fresh performances and new readers around the world.
