Description

The story opens in the bright court of Athens, where the soon‑to‑be Duke Theseus is preparing for his wedding to the regal Hippolyta. Their celebration is promised to span four joyful days, and the anticipation of summer’s longest night already stirs a playful mood among the courtiers. Amid the festivities, the stern father Egeus brings a pressing complaint: he insists his daughter Hermia obey his will to marry the man he favors.

Hermia’s heart, however, belongs to another—Lysander—who vows to flee with her into the forest to escape the duke’s decree. Opposing them is Demetrius, a suitor favored by Egeus, whose presence adds tension to the lovers’ secret plans. As the characters prepare to leave the city, the stage is set for a night where magic, mischievous sprites, and mistaken identities will turn simple quarrels into a bewildering, enchanted romp.

About the author

William Shakespeare

William Shakespeare

1564–1616

A playwright, poet, and actor from Stratford-upon-Avon, he created characters and lines that have stayed alive for more than four centuries. His stories of love, ambition, jealousy, power, and forgiveness still feel startlingly human.
