An aging monarch, weary of the weight of rule, decides to relinquish his power by splitting his realm among his three daughters. He summons Goneril, Regan and Cordelia and asks each to proclaim how much she loves him, hoping to crown his favorite with the largest share. The proud and flattering elder sisters flood him with grand declarations, while the honest Cordelia refuses to indulge the performance, opting for sincere silence. This moment sets a chain of misjudgments that begins to unravel the kingdom’s stability.
Meanwhile, the noble Earl of Gloucester faces his own family crisis, torn between his legitimate son Edgar and his scheming illegitimate brother Edmund, whose ambition knows no bounds. As loyalties shift and hidden motives surface, the court’s political landscape grows increasingly treacherous. The play weaves together themes of authority, betrayal, and the painful price of pride, inviting listeners to witness how a single act of hubris can echo through friends and foes alike.

A playwright, poet, and actor from Stratford-upon-Avon, he created characters and lines that have stayed alive for more than four centuries. His stories of love, ambition, jealousy, power, and forgiveness still feel startlingly human.
