In Illyria a lovesick duke fills his palace with music, hoping the sweet strains will sate his yearning. He confesses a relentless obsession with the beautiful Countess Olivia, whose grief for a lost brother has driven her into seclusion. His courtiers whisper about the impossibility of winning her affection, but the duke refuses to abandon his hope, dreaming of a day when love might finally bloom.
Meanwhile a shipwreck leaves a young woman and her loyal captain adrift on the unfamiliar coast. Believing her brother perished, she learns the name of the duke and hears rumors of his pursuit of the mourning countess. Determined to find purpose in this strange land, she resolves to enter the duke’s service, disguising herself to survive and to stay close to the man who governs the realm. The stage is set for mistaken identities, playful scheming, and a tangled web of unspoken yearning.

A playwright, poet, and actor from Stratford-upon-Avon, he created characters and lines that have stayed alive for more than four centuries. His stories of love, ambition, jealousy, power, and forgiveness still feel startlingly human.
