Description

In a bright, bustling French court, the Countess of Rossillon watches her son Bertram prepare for royal service while a gentlewoman named Helena mourns the loss of her father. The king suffers from a mysterious illness, and his physicians are at a loss, prompting the court to seek any remedy. Amid the palace’s corridors, Helena’s intelligence and quiet determination begin to stand out, hinting at a resourceful spirit beneath her modest demeanor.

When the king’s condition worsens, he promises a generous reward to anyone who can cure him, and Helena steps forward, pledging her own love as the price. She offers to travel to the French camp, confident that her skill and resolve will succeed where others have failed. The early tension centers on her bold promise and the skeptical reaction of the proud Bertram, setting the stage for a clever contest of wit, devotion, and the lengths one will go to win a heart.

About the author

William Shakespeare

William Shakespeare

1564–1616

A playwright, poet, and actor from Stratford-upon-Avon, he created characters and lines that have stayed alive for more than four centuries. His stories of love, ambition, jealousy, power, and forgiveness still feel startlingly human.
