About the author

Born in Ohio in 1840, Edward Sylvester Ellis became one of the most productive American writers of his time. He is especially remembered for adventure fiction for boys, including frontier and juvenile series that found a wide audience in the late 1800s.

His work stretched well beyond popular fiction. He also wrote books on history and biography, as well as educational material, which helps explain why his name appears across so many very different kinds of 19th-century publications.

Ellis died in 1916, but his stories continued to circulate for years afterward. Today he is often associated with the energy of early mass-market American storytelling and with the reading culture that grew around inexpensive popular books.
