Description

Warren Starr, a nineteen‑year‑old hunter from South Dakota, rides home from Fort Meade across the snow‑laden prairie, his thoughts tangled with rumors of rising Sioux unrest. The stark, cold landscape and the distant Black Hills frame his uneasy journey toward his family’s ranch, where his sister Dot and parents await. As he debates whether to press on or wait for daylight, the tension between the settlers and the native tribes looms large.

Back on the ranch, Warren discovers that his father’s helpers—steady hand Jared Plummer and spirited Irish newcomer Tim Brophy—are already on alert, their guns ready for any sudden raid. The quiet of the prairie is broken by uneasy whispers of an approaching band, forcing the young men to weigh duty against the safety of their loved ones. Early sketches of camaraderie emerge as they plan a cautious defense while the looming specter of conflict tests their resolve. Listeners are drawn into the raw, wintery atmosphere and the moral choices faced by a community on the brink.
