Nick Ribsam returns to his modest Pennsylvania home after a revitalizing adventure in the Maine woods, his health brightened and his spirit lively. The warm welcome from his family and the gracious Watrous household reflects a simple, wholesome life where sincere conversation and outdoor toil speak louder than any sermon.
When Herbert Watrous, a well‑to‑do New York youth transformed by Nick’s earlier influence, arrives for a visit, the scene takes a somber turn. Slender, flushed, and short‑of‑breath, Herbert confides that his studies have left him near the brink of consumption. Nick’s quick concern leads him to urge his friend out of the house and into the fresh country air, believing that the very landscape that healed him might rescue Herbert as well.
