Description

In the wake of the Civil War, eighteen‑year‑old Avon Burnet lives on a modest Texas ranch with his uncle, Captain Dohm Shirril, a veteran determined to rebuild his fortunes. A natural horseman on his trusty mustang Thunderbolt, Avon has already mastered rounding up, branding and the grueling routines of a cowboy’s life. The close‑knit family—his aunt, the steadfast house‑wife, and the ever‑watchful servant—share quiet evenings filled with stories of past hardships and hopeful plans for the future.

Now Avon faces his first true test: guiding a herd of two thousand head of cattle northward along the legendary Great Cattle Trail, through the rugged plains, Indian territories, and into Kansas. Along the dusty route he will encounter relentless weather, the ever‑present threat of Comanche and Kiowa raids, and the demanding camaraderie of a seasoned crew. As the trail stretches ahead, Avon’s skill, courage and youthful optimism will be measured against a world that is both unforgiving and full of promise.
