Description

A diligent telegraph operator in the bustling river town of Damietta finds his routine interrupted one lazy summer afternoon when a barefoot boy named Ben Mayberry drifts downstream on a lone log. Ben, ten years old, is strikingly bright and athletic, the kind of country lad who can sprint like the wind and throw with uncanny precision. The narrator, intrigued by the boy’s natural grace and the hardships he faces after his father’s tragic death, watches from the riverbank with a mix of curiosity and concern.

The peace of the moment shatters when a trio of well‑dressed city youths decide to test their cruelty, hurling stones at the unsuspecting boy. Ben’s quick wit and daring response turn the encounter into a tense stand‑off, drawing onlookers and forcing the narrator to decide whether to intervene. This early clash sets the stage for a story about resilience, the clash of worlds, and the unexpected bonds that form when courage meets compassion.
