About the author
Born in Edinburgh in 1825, he came from the well-known Ballantyne family of printers and publishers. At sixteen he went to Canada and spent about six years working for the Hudson’s Bay Company, an experience that gave him firsthand knowledge of frontier life and supplied material for many of his later books.
After returning to Scotland, he turned those experiences into writing and began a remarkably productive career. He wrote more than a hundred books, most of them lively adventure stories for younger readers, and became especially famous for The Coral Island (1858), one of the classic boys’ adventure novels of the nineteenth century.
His fiction is remembered for its energy, practical detail, and strong sense of moral purpose, with young heroes often relying on courage, resourcefulness, and friendship. He was also an artist who exhibited watercolor paintings, and he died in Rome in 1894.
