About the author
Born in Edinburgh in 1825, R. M. Ballantyne grew up in a family tied to the Scottish printing world. As a teenager he went to Canada and worked for the Hudson's Bay Company, an experience that gave him firsthand knowledge of wilderness life and shaped many of his early books.
Ballantyne went on to become a hugely prolific author of adventure fiction for young readers, writing more than a hundred books. He is especially remembered for The Coral Island (1858), a novel of shipwreck and survival that became one of the best-known Victorian boys' books.
His fiction was often rooted in places and experiences he had observed for himself, which helped give it an unusually vivid, practical feel. In addition to writing, he was also an artist and exhibited watercolours at the Royal Scottish Academy. He died in Rome in 1894.
