Description

The story opens on a pristine Pacific island, its golden beaches and emerald hills bathed in early‑morning light. Birds wheel overhead, fish leap from the surf, and the jungle hums with life, yet no human traces mar the landscape. In the distance a lone raft drifts, its battered mast bearing a faded red flag. On it a weary sailor and his tiny terrier cling to consciousness, the sea’s relentless rhythm their only companion.

John Jarwin, gaunt and exhausted, awakens to find his faithful dog Cuffy at his side, a silent reminder of loyalty amid the bleakness. As hunger gnaws and the raft offers little shelter, the pair must decide whether to surrender to the indifferent ocean or summon the stubborn resolve that kept them afloat. Their bond becomes the spark that drives the first desperate attempts to find food, signal rescue, and make sense of a fate that seems both cruel and strangely hopeful.
