Description

In the frozen reaches of the North American interior, a modest settlement clings to the banks of the Red River, a patchwork of Indigenous peoples, Scots, and French‑Canadians eking out a life far from the sea. The daily rhythm is governed by the relentless cycle of snow‑covered winters and brief, bright summers, while the Hudson’s Bay Company’s annual ships bring the few luxuries the colonists cannot produce themselves. Into this stark world step Charley and his sister Kate, two young members of the community whose childhood has been shaped by the harsh climate and the demanding trade of furs.

The opening scene finds Charley on a slab of blue ice, his spirit weighed down by a desperate wish to escape the confines of the settlement. After a tense exchange with Kate, he seizes a moment of daring, pulling his sister across the frozen river and into the tangled willows beyond. Their hurried flight hints at the larger challenges of growing up on the frontier, where bravery, loyalty, and the pull of the untamed wilderness will test them at every turn.
