Description

Jeffrey Benson grows up in a modest seaside town, haunted by his father’s death and the cold indifference of a money‑driven uncle. Instead of a law office, he follows the call of the waves, seeking a life of purpose beyond the simple “fun” of schoolyard games. With little experience but plenty of determination, he befriends a seasoned skipper who offers him a place on a tiny schooner, setting the stage for his first true work at sea.

Over six years the young sailor learns the hard rhythms of the coast, surviving storms and shipwrecks that test his courage. When a tragic gale destroys his vessel, his bravery earns him a position with the local coastguard, bringing him back near his hometown. There he confides in the wise, fragile Miss Millet, whose gentle counsel hints at the challenges and loyalties that will shape his future on the shoreline.
