About the author

Born in Scotland in 1828, Margaret Oliphant Wilson Oliphant wrote under the name Mrs. Oliphant and became one of the most prolific authors of the 19th century. She is remembered as a novelist, historical writer, biographer, and reviewer whose fiction moved easily between domestic realism, historical subjects, and uncanny tales.

Her career began early, and after she was widowed she wrote with remarkable steadiness while supporting her family. She published extensively in both books and magazines, and she is especially associated with the Chronicles of Carlingford, a series admired for its lively portraits of provincial life.

What makes her especially appealing today is her range: she could be funny, observant, moving, and quietly eerie, sometimes all at once. Readers often come to her for her clear-eyed view of ordinary people under pressure, then stay for the intelligence and warmth of her storytelling.
