Description

John Tatham, a solid‑hearted barrister in his mid‑fifties, starts a summer morning with a simple breakfast—until a delicate, handwritten note arrives, asking if he knows the man courting his cousin Elinor. The inquiry unsettles him more than the stale tea or over‑cooked bacon, exposing a tension between his habitual self‑sufficiency and the sudden intrusion of family intrigue. As he peers out over the mist‑lit streets of the Temple, his thoughts drift from the artificial glow of sunlight to the inevitable warmth of human connections he has long avoided.

The story follows Tatham as he navigates the expectations of his social circle and the quiet urgings of those who care for him. In the early chapters, the polite veneer of polite society begins to crack, hinting at a deeper examination of duty, desire, and the fragile balance between personal contentment and the pull of relationships yet to be defined.
