Description

Miss Phœbe Tozer has spent her youth preparing for a role that seems predestined: the dutiful daughter of Carlingford’s leading dissenting family and, eventually, the minister’s wife. When she marries the young Reverend Mr. Beecham, the union pleases her parents but sparks quiet resentment among the town’s other prominent families, who view a clerical match as less advantageous than a commercial one. The novel paints her modest trousseau and her attempts to navigate the expectations of a chapel‑bound society, highlighting the subtle snubs and whispered judgments that follow her every step.

As Phœbe steps into the world of Salem Chapel, she confronts a community divided between reverence for religious service and the allure of material prosperity. Through lively gatherings, church meetings, and everyday encounters, the story explores how a young woman balances personal ambition, family loyalty, and the weight of public opinion. The early chapters set the stage for a nuanced portrait of social ambition and quiet resilience in a tightly knit Victorian town.

Mrs. (Margaret) Oliphant

1828–1897

A hugely productive Victorian storyteller, she wrote vivid novels of family life, small-town society, and the supernatural while supporting her family through her pen. Her work ranges from the much-loved Chronicles of Carlingford to ghost stories that still feel sharp and modern.
