Description

Hester moves through the genteel world of Redborough with a poise that hints at both pride and an unquenchable curiosity. Trained by “Nature’s school,” she possesses a keen eye for the subtleties of human behavior, yet she remains bound by the expectations of a society that values propriety above all. As the daughter of a respectable family, she balances her own desires with the obligations imposed by her mother and the wider community.

When Emma, the youngest of the household, begs Hester to intervene on her behalf, the calm veneer begins to crack. Emma’s anxieties about securing a future with Roland—who is poised to visit—turn the conversation into a delicate dance of business, love, and familial duty. Hester’s sharp retort and the looming presence of Mrs. John set the stage for a clash between personal ambition and the constraints of tradition, promising a vivid portrait of women negotiating their place in a world that often silences them.

About the author

Mrs. (Margaret) Oliphant

Mrs. (Margaret) Oliphant

1828–1897

A hugely productive Victorian storyteller, she wrote vivid novels of family life, small-town society, and the supernatural while supporting her family through her pen. Her work ranges from the much-loved Chronicles of Carlingford to ghost stories that still feel sharp and modern.
