Description

The Beresfords are a young, affluent couple who treat marriage as an endless honeymoon, flitting from the Riviera to Norway on a whim. Their solitary daughter stays at home under the watchful eye of a trusted nurse, while the parents fill their elegant home with rare artworks, exotic tapestries, and a library of vellum‑bound volumes. Their lives seem a perpetual celebration of beauty and freedom, a world where the future feels as bright and untroubled as the pictures adorning their walls.

Yet beneath the glittering surface, subtle unease begins to stir. When Cara reaches ten, her mother’s health starts to falter—not with any obvious physical ailment, but with a vague nervousness that doctors dismiss and Aunt Charity scoffs at. This lingering malaise hints that the couple’s carefree existence may soon be tested, inviting listeners to wonder how the Beresfords will confront the shadows gathering on the edges of their seemingly perfect life.

Mrs. (Margaret) Oliphant

Mrs. (Margaret) Oliphant

1828–1897

A hugely productive Victorian storyteller, she wrote vivid novels of family life, small-town society, and the supernatural while supporting her family through her pen. Her work ranges from the much-loved Chronicles of Carlingford to ghost stories that still feel sharp and modern.
