Description

Norman Bellendean returns to his Scottish home a decade after leaving the colony, bearing the marks of a life lived abroad—bronzed skin, a beard, and a chest adorned with foreign decorations. By the strange terms of his late uncle’s will, he inherits the family estates at nearly thirty, thrust now into a role that feels both familiar and alien. Though he has navigated the courts of India and the deserts of distant lands, the streets of London and the customs of his own kin are as puzzling to him as a child’s first steps.

The novel follows Norman’s tentative navigation of this new world, where his seasoned confidence meets the simple, honest rhythms of his hometown. He is escorted by a handful of loyal companions—a retired colonel, a fellow officer, and a younger friend eager to guide him through the city’s charms and pitfalls. As the celebratory festivities begin, Norman’s mixture of worldly insight and naïve curiosity creates a vivid portrait of a man caught between two very different societies.

Mrs. (Margaret) Oliphant

1828–1897

A hugely productive Victorian storyteller, she wrote vivid novels of family life, small-town society, and the supernatural while supporting her family through her pen. Her work ranges from the much-loved Chronicles of Carlingford to ghost stories that still feel sharp and modern.
