Description

The Rentons have long been a name synonymous with ambition and enterprise, their lineage traced back through centuries of daring ventures and hard‑won fortunes. As the patriarch lies on his deathbed, the story opens with a careful portrait of his restless energy, his keen senses, and a restless drive to seize every fair advantage. Yet his final years are marked by a softer side—a marriage to a gentle, unremarkable wife that softens his relentless pursuit and casts a shadow over the future he had hoped to mold.

Into this poised inheritance step three very different sons. The eldest, Ben, is kept from the colonial ventures that once defined the family; the middle brother Laurie likewise sidesteps the expected overseas posting, while the youngest, Frank, is thrust into a commissioned role in the Guards—a choice unheard of for a Renton. Their aunt, a staunch guardian of tradition, watches with dismay as the brothers begin to carve their own paths, setting the stage for the choices and conflicts that will shape their lives.

Mrs. (Margaret) Oliphant

1828–1897

A hugely productive Victorian storyteller, she wrote vivid novels of family life, small-town society, and the supernatural while supporting her family through her pen. Her work ranges from the much-loved Chronicles of Carlingford to ghost stories that still feel sharp and modern.
