Margaret Oliphant Wilson Oliphant, usually published as Mrs. Oliphant, was a Scottish novelist and historical writer born in 1828. She is remembered as one of the most prolific writers of the Victorian period, with fiction ranging from domestic and small-town life to historical novels and supernatural stories.
She began publishing young, and her career lasted for decades. Reference sources describe her as especially known for her portraits of provincial life, while modern readers often also come to her through works such as the Carlingford novels and her ghost stories, including The Open Door.
