About the author
Born Margaret Oliphant Wilson in Wallyford, near Edinburgh, in 1828, she became known as Mrs. Oliphant after marrying her cousin, the stained-glass artist Francis Wilson Oliphant, in 1852. After his death in 1859, she supported her family largely through her writing and built an exceptionally wide-ranging career.
Oliphant published more than one hundred books, including novels, short stories, biographies, histories, and works of literary criticism. Her fiction is celebrated for its lively social observation, especially in the Carlingford series, while her tales of the supernatural reveal a darker and more haunting side of her imagination.
She continued writing through personal loss and financial difficulty, producing notable works such as Salem Chapel, The Perpetual Curate, Miss Marjoribanks, Hester, and Kirsteen. She died in 1897, leaving behind one of the most substantial literary legacies of the Victorian era.
