Description

Young Dr. Rider has set up his modest practice in the bustling new quarter of Carlingford, a corner house lit by a solitary red lamp that casts its glow over brick‑fields and half‑formed streets. Determined to earn a living rather than chase social prestige, he bears the modest M.R.C.S. on his brass plate, a concession to the wary residents who distrust physicians. While his older colleague in the genteel Grange Lane enjoys aristocratic patronage, Rider faces the daily grind of treating the working‑class crowd, his confidence tempered by self‑doubt.

Amid his professional struggles, Rider’s heart is caught by Bessie Christian, whose wedding veil he watches from a distance, a silent reminder of the love he cannot claim. The narrative peels back the thin veneer of his orderly life to reveal an upstairs room shrouded in stale tobacco smoke, where a lethargic, pipe‑handed man lounges over a well‑worn novel. This enigmatic presence hints at hidden tensions and secrets that could upend Rider’s carefully managed existence, inviting listeners to explore the delicate balance between duty, desire, and the shadows that linger just beyond the doorway.

Mrs. (Margaret) Oliphant

Mrs. (Margaret) Oliphant

1828–1897

A hugely productive Victorian storyteller, she wrote vivid novels of family life, small-town society, and the supernatural while supporting her family through her pen. Her work ranges from the much-loved Chronicles of Carlingford to ghost stories that still feel sharp and modern.
