Description

The story opens with a striking contrast between two neighboring estates. The stately Penton house, with its grand Palladian façade and meticulously tended gardens, belongs to an aging noble family whose only daughter is a stern, childless matriarch. Not far away, the modest Penton Hook clings to a river bend, its damp, creeping walls and flood‑prone grounds hinting at a life of hardship and lively, youthful energy.

Against this backdrop, the novel explores the clash of old‑world respectability and the chaotic vitality of a poorer branch of the same family. As the two households interact, their differing values and circumstances set the stage for intrigue, misunderstandings, and the possibility of unexpected alliances. Listeners will be drawn into the beautifully described countryside and the subtle tensions that begin to stir within these intertwined lives.

Mrs. (Margaret) Oliphant

1828–1897
