About the author

Born in Camden East, Ontario, on November 23, 1862, Gilbert Parker was a Canadian-born novelist who built his career in Britain. Before settling there, he taught in Canada, spent time in Australia working in journalism, and then turned seriously to writing in London.

He became popular for fiction that drew on Canadian history, frontier life, and imperial themes. Among his best-known books are Pierre and His People and The Seats of the Mighty, and Britannica notes that The Seats of the Mighty was his most widely known work. His stories helped introduce many readers to dramatic episodes from Canadian and colonial history.

Parker also had a public life beyond literature. He served as a Conservative member of the British Parliament for Gravesend from 1900 to 1918, and later received both a baronetcy and appointment to the Privy Council. He died in London on September 6, 1932.
