About the author

Born in Camden East, Ontario, in 1862, Gilbert Parker built an international career that stretched well beyond Canada. He became known in Britain as a novelist and public figure, and he was later created a baronet. His fiction often drew on history and empire, especially French Canada and other far-flung settings, blending adventure, sentiment, and political tension.

Parker began attracting attention in London in the early 1890s, where his romantic historical novels found a large readership. Among his best-known books are The Seats of the Mighty, The Right of Way, and The Weavers. He had a gift for storytelling that appealed to a broad audience, and for a time he was one of the most commercially successful writers working in English.

His life also included politics: he served as a member of the British Parliament as well as pursuing his literary career. Parker died in 1932, but his work remains a window into the tastes and ambitions of popular fiction in his era.
