About the author

Born in Camden East, Ontario, on November 23, 1862, Gilbert Parker became known as a Canadian-born novelist, journalist, and later a British politician. After teaching in Ontario and working in journalism, he moved to Australia for a time and then settled in London, where his writing career took off.

Parker was especially admired for historical romances and adventure novels, many of them drawing on Canadian history and frontier life. Among his notable books are Pierre and His People and The Seats of the Mighty, the novel most often singled out as his best known work. His fiction helped introduce many readers in Britain and beyond to French Canadian and North American settings.

His public life grew alongside his literary success. He served as a Member of Parliament in Britain, was made a baronet in 1915, and joined the Privy Council in 1916. He died in London on September 6, 1932, leaving behind a career that mixed popular storytelling with a prominent role in public life.
