Description

The story opens on the great plains of western Canada, where endless grain fields now stretch across a land once marked only by a solitary Hudson’s Bay post. Two neighboring settlements—Lebanon, bold and English‑speaking, and Manitou, slower, deeply Catholic—stand as symbols of a frontier caught between the raw vigor of the prairie and the comforts of modern life: telephones, motor cars, schools and churches appear almost overnight. This vivid backdrop gives listeners a sense of both the rugged isolation and the bustling promise that reshaped the region.

At the heart of the tale is a young, well‑educated man named Ingolby, whose ambition and fresh ideas clash with the entrenched habits of the townsfolk. His world is further complicated when he meets a spirited heroine from the gypsy community, now striving to adapt to settled society. As they navigate love, ambition, and the stubborn pull of tradition, the listeners are drawn into a lively portrait of a nation in the making, where every decision feels like the first step on uncharted ground.
