Gilbert Parker

Born in Camden East, Ontario, on November 23, 1862, Gilbert Parker became known for historical romances and adventure fiction that reached a wide international audience. He worked as a teacher in Canada, spent several years in Australia in journalism, and then settled in Britain, where his writing career took off.

He is especially remembered for novels such as The Seats of the Mighty and for stories set in Canada, including Pierre and His People. His fiction often drew on Canadian landscapes and history while aiming for the pace and excitement of popular Victorian and Edwardian storytelling.

Parker was also active in politics in Britain, serving as a Member of Parliament, and he was later made a baronet. He died in London on September 6, 1932, leaving behind a body of work that helped bring Canadian themes into mainstream English-language popular fiction.
