In the frozen reaches of the Canadian prairies, a wiry mixed‑heritage wanderer known as Little Hammer makes his uneasy home at the Hudson’s Bay Company post at Yellow Quill. Unconcerned with the disdain of missionaries, traders, and the mounted police, he clings to the post like a stubborn child to a promise, greeting the sergeant with a familiar “How!” and borrowing tobacco from the women who keep the lodge warm. Baptized at the urging of a woman, his brief piety is quickly tested when he asks a missionary for a single dollar and is rebuffed, sparking a rare outburst of profanity that hints at the tension simmering beneath his carefree façade.
That same night, a trapper’s accusation turns deadly, and Little Hammer, with a cold calm, raises a knife that ends the stranger’s life. Rather than flee, he offers himself up to the sergeant, hands outstretched for the handcuffs that will bind him. The next morning finds the two men thrust together into a raging snowstorm, their horses locked side by side as they trudge through a white‑out that threatens to erase any sense of direction. Their uneasy partnership sets the stage for a harsh struggle against nature and the lingering shadows of the night’s violence.
