About the author

Born in St. Albans, Vermont, on November 16, 1877, Arthur Scott Bailey later studied at the University of Vermont and then at Harvard, where he earned his bachelor's degree in 1902. Before becoming known as an author, he worked in business and then as an editor in New York.

Bailey wrote more than forty children's books, many of them centered on the small dramas of farm, forest, and field. He became especially associated with animal stories that quietly folded natural history into the plot, and contemporary descriptions of his work noted that he did not "write down" to children.

He also created the syndicated comic strip Animal Whys in 1937. Bailey died on October 17, 1949. No suitable verified portrait image was confirmed from the sources reviewed here, so a profile image is not included.
