About the author
Born in Villers-Cotterêts, France, in 1802, Alexandre Dumas became one of the most widely read writers of the 19th century. He started out working in Paris and first found success in the theater before turning to fiction, where his gift for drama, cliffhangers, and vivid characters made him a sensation.
Dumas wrote at astonishing speed and on a huge scale, often publishing in serial form for eager readers. His most famous novels include The Three Musketeers and The Count of Monte Cristo, books that helped define the historical adventure novel and have remained beloved around the world.
He was also the son of General Thomas-Alexandre Dumas, a celebrated French military officer of mixed-race heritage, and that family history has become an important part of how readers understand his life and legacy. Dumas died in 1870, but his stories have never gone out of print and continue to inspire films, television, theater, and new generations of readers.
