About the author
Alexandre Dumas (1802–1870), also known as Alexandre Dumas père, was a French novelist and playwright born in Villers-Cotterêts, France. He moved to Paris as a young man and built a celebrated literary career through plays, serialized fiction, historical novels, and essays on famous crimes.
His best-known works include The Three Musketeers, Twenty Years After, The Vicomte de Bragelonne, and The Count of Monte Cristo. Written with remarkable energy and a gift for suspense, these books helped make Dumas one of the most widely read authors of the nineteenth century.
Dumas was the son of General Thomas-Alexandre Dumas, a distinguished military leader of African and European ancestry. Alexandre Dumas died on December 5, 1870, leaving behind a body of work that continues to inspire films, television adaptations, stage productions, and new generations of readers.
