About the author

Born in Villers-Cotterêts, France, in 1802, Alexandre Dumas became one of the most widely read writers of the 19th century. He first won attention as a playwright and then became famous for fast-moving historical novels packed with duels, escapes, conspiracies, and unforgettable heroes.

His best-known books include The Three Musketeers and The Count of Monte Cristo, works that have been adapted again and again for stage and screen. Dumas was famously prolific, and his memoirs and travel writing also added to his larger-than-life reputation.

His background is an important part of his story. He was the son of General Thomas-Alexandre Dumas, and his family line included Marie-Cessette Dumas, an enslaved woman from Saint-Domingue. That history has made Dumas not only a central figure in French literature, but also an author whose life speaks to questions of identity, inheritance, and fame.
