Le Speronare

A restless traveler sets out from Paris with a grand itinerary that sweeps through Italy’s most celebrated cities, and by the time he reaches Naples the excitement of his expedition clashes with the grim reality of a cholera quarantine. He and his companion, Jadin, race to the harbor hoping to catch a ship for Sicily, only to discover that bureaucratic delays and a list of prohibited visitors stand in their way. The atmosphere is vivid, painted with bustling ports, the weight of diplomatic paperwork, and the lingering scent of impending adventure.

When the narrator finally meets the cold‑hearted ambassador, he is abruptly told he cannot enter the Kingdom of Naples.
