Three friends—Dick, the sturdy Sandy, and the quick‑footed Toma—row into a mist‑draped lake at dusk, guided by a description from the Half‑Way House factor. Their canoe brushes against a quiet, wooded island dominated by a lone, soaring rock that matches the legend of “the dinosaur’s island.” Excitement crackles as they compare the landscape to the map they were given, each boy confident that they have finally reached the spot the factor described.
At the base of the spire they uncover a massive fossil, a dinosaur skeleton poised as if clawing its way from the earth itself. The sheer size and eerie realism of the bones fill the boys with a shiver of awe and a sudden, irresistible urge to explore further. As the sun sinks, their laughter echoes over the water, hinting at the daring escapades that lie ahead in the northern wilderness.
