Mary Grant Bruce, born Minnie Grant Bruce in Victoria, Australia, on May 24, 1878, was a journalist as well as a children's author. She is most closely associated with the Billabong series, which began with A Little Bush Maid in 1910 and grew into one of the best-known sequences in Australian children's fiction.
Before her success as a novelist, she worked in journalism in Melbourne, including editing the children's page of The Leader. Her fiction drew on Australian rural life and helped shape how many readers imagined the bush, mixing adventure, family life, humor, and wartime experience.
Bruce spent part of her later life in England and died at Bexhill-on-Sea on July 2, 1958. Though writing styles and attitudes from her era can feel dated now, her books remain an important part of Australian literary history and of the long tradition of stories written for young readers.
