Description

In a bustling London classroom of 1921, the Rainham twins—Wilfred, with his defiant red hair, and his clever sister Avice—navigate a chaotic lesson that spirals from a tangled French exercise to a splattering of ink across an imagined African coastline. Their younger sister Queenie, perpetually teary‑eyed, and the weary teacher Cecilia try to restore order amid snide banter, spilled ink, and the occasional scolding that hints at deeper family dynamics.

Beyond the cramped schoolroom, the children’s restless imagination is sparked by a faded map promising far‑off horizons. The lingering verses of Dorothea Mackellar’s poem whisper of a sun‑kissed, open country that seems to call their names. As the lesson ends and the ink dries, the promise of returning to a place called Billabong—an untamed landscape of plains and forests—looms, setting the stage for an adventure that will carry the siblings far from the soot‑gray streets of London to the wide‑open heart of a distant land.
