Description

A weary yet determined young woman finds herself caught between the cramped routine of city life and the promise of a fresh start. With her brother Colin juggling precarious dock work and her sister‑in‑law Madge fretting over finances, she spends her evenings scouring office registries and dreaming of a quiet retreat in the countryside. Their modest Christmas, spent in a botanical garden with simple sandwiches and the occasional bottle of burgundy, reveals both the strain and the stubborn hope that keeps the household afloat.

Just as they begin to accept the lull of everyday hardships, an unexpected envelope arrives, bearing a formal offer from a distant household. The letter promises modest pay, travel expenses, and a brief respite from the relentless grind—an invitation that could finally lift her from the endless cycle of waiting. As she reads the proposal aloud, the prospect of stepping into a new environment sparks both excitement and apprehension, hinting at the possibilities that lie ahead.
