Description

In the rain‑soaked fields of Flanders, a narrow network of trenches winds through endless mud, sandbags and barbed‑wire, while distant shells scar the landscape. The routine is a mix of frantic repair work, sleepless nights under a constant roar of artillery, and fleeting moments of quiet when the sun briefly lifts the gloom. Even the sparrows seem to pretend the war is far away, only to scatter at the first crack of a German gun, underscoring the fragile line between normalcy and chaos.

Amid this harsh backdrop stands Jim Linton, a towering Australian fresh from the sun‑baked plains of his homeland. Bare‑headed, mud‑caked, and clutching a steaming mug of tea, he confronts the monotony of bully‑beef and the ever‑present threat of shrapnel. Alongside his fellow soldiers, Jim navigates the exhausting grind of trench life, finding brief solace in camaraderie and the stubborn hope that each new dawn might bring a pause in the relentless “breakfast hate.
