HISTORY OF THE THIRTY YEARS' WAR IN GERMANY. - BOOK V.

Description

Following Wallenstein’s demise, the Imperial court turns to a fresh commander, elevating the Emperor’s son Ferdinand to lead a newly assembled army. Ferdinand, with support from the Duke of Lorraine, the Cardinal Infante, and a massive force from the Spanish, launches a vigorous siege of Ratisbon, forcing the stubborn city to capitulate after fierce resistance. The swift capture of neighboring strongholds like Donauwörth and the investment of Nordlingen alarm the Swedish allies, who see their network of supportive towns crumbling.

Determined to relieve Nordlingen, the Swedish general Gustav Horn and the charismatic Duke Bernard of Weimar push forward despite being outnumbered, advocating caution that is overruled by eager commanders. On a moonlit night they attempt to seize the commanding heights, only to find the Imperial troops entrenched and to suffer a chaotic clash amplified by an accidental powder explosion. The ensuing Imperial cavalry charge shatters the Swedish lines, leading to massive casualties and the capture of key officers. The defeat leaves the Swedish leadership uneasy, foreshadowing a tense winter of regrouping.
