In a spacious marble hall of Messina, the widowed duchess stands before the city’s elders, her sorrow palpable as she reflects on the death of her husband, the ruler whose firm hand once held the city together. She speaks of the once‑bright unity between her two sons, Manuel and César, and the dark seed of rivalry that has begun to sprout. The atmosphere is heavy with the chant of the chorus, reminding listeners that the fate of a whole city hangs on a family’s private discord.
Manuel, noble and impulsive, dreams of heroic deeds, while César, more cautious, seeks order through law and alliance. Their mother, torn between maternal love and civic duty, pleads for peace, fearing that the brothers’ clash will spill blood onto the streets of Messina. As tensions rise, the first messenger arrives, hinting at an external threat that may force the brothers to choose between loyalty to each other and the salvation of their city.
