Description

In the tense days before the nation erupts into war, a young Southern cadet stands at a crossroads. Fresh from school, Rodney returns home with a solemn promise to swap civilian clothes for a uniform the moment he steps foot in his hometown. His mother watches with pride while his own convictions—shaped by fervent speeches and the restless optimism of his peers—push him toward enlistment, even as doubts begin to surface.

As the drums of conflict grow louder, Rodney joins a ragtag group of fellow volunteers, learning drills, forming uneasy alliances, and confronting the harsh realities of military life. The story follows his struggle to balance personal honor with the chaotic demands of a nation on the brink, offering a vivid portrait of youthful idealism tested by loyalty, friendship, and the first glimmers of battle.

Harry Castlemon

1842–1915

A hugely popular writer of adventure stories for young readers, he turned Civil War experience and a love of the outdoors into fast-moving tales of gunboats, camping, hunting, and frontier life. Writing as Harry Castlemon, he helped shape the style of boys' series fiction in the late 1800s.
