Description

At Fort Lamoine, discipline hangs by a thread as a rash of desertions threatens the fragile order of the remote outpost. Colonel Brown, fed up with the mutinous whispers among his men, summons his most reliable non‑commissioned officer—Corporal Bob Owens—to track down a band of wayward soldiers who slipped away under cover of night, armed and dangerous. The young corporal, once a runaway thief, now finds himself thrust into a perilous chase that will test both his courage and the trust the command has reluctantly placed in him.

Through dusty trails and tense encounters, Owens must navigate the rugged frontier while confronting the moral ambiguities of military life. As he pursues the fugitives, the story paints a vivid picture of camaraderie, duty, and the stark realities of soldiering far from civilization. Listeners will be drawn into the gritty atmosphere of the western frontier, feeling every heartbeat of a man striving to prove his worth amid uncertainty and danger.

A hugely popular writer of adventure stories for young readers, he turned Civil War experience and a love of the outdoors into fast-moving tales of gunboats, camping, hunting, and frontier life. Writing as Harry Castlemon, he helped shape the style of boys' series fiction in the late 1800s.
