A fierce winter storm rattles a modest cabin high in the mountains, where three young men huddle around a crackling fire while a restless wind howls through the pines. Uncle Ezra, a seasoned sheep‑herder turned trapper, shares the legend of Elam Storm—a wandering wolfer with a reputation for daring exploits and a hidden “lost nugget” that has driven many to ruin. As the night deepens, the narrator, Carlos Burton, listens to Ezra’s warning that the lure of treasure can be as treacherous as the wolves that stalk the high country.
Together with his friend Ben Hastings, the son of an army officer, Carlos is drawn into Elam’s world of rugged plains, rugged camaraderie, and whispered promises of fortune. Their curiosity is sparked by stories of a mysterious gold nugget, while the threat of hostile terrain and prowling predators looms ever larger. The tale promises a blend of frontier danger and youthful adventure, inviting listeners to trace the first steps of a quest that could change their lives forever.

A hugely popular writer of adventure stories for young readers, he turned Civil War experience and a love of the outdoors into fast-moving tales of gunboats, camping, hunting, and frontier life. Writing as Harry Castlemon, he helped shape the style of boys' series fiction in the late 1800s.
