Description

In the heat‑baked streets of Maritzburg, a lanky young American steps into a world of cattle dealers, speculators, and a landlord who keeps a wary eye on every newcomer. He’s there on a “sporting expedition,” a phrase that masks a university‑backed mission to gather specimens for a distant museum. The locals, convinced he’s an inexperienced “boy” with nothing but tall tales of Rocky‑Mountain hunts, plot to keep him from the interior they consider their own hunting ground.

Behind the polished moleskin jacket and leather helmet, the stranger carries a quiet confidence that unsettles the men who trade in deception. As he negotiates oxen, wagons, and supplies, he must navigate suspicion, rivalry, and his own uncertain past while charting a course into Africa’s untamed heart. The opening offers a vivid clash of cultures and ambitions, setting the stage for an adventure that will test his resourcefulness and reveal why his journey matters to the continent’s history.

Harry Castlemon

1842–1915

A hugely popular writer of adventure stories for young readers, he turned Civil War experience and a love of the outdoors into fast-moving tales of gunboats, camping, hunting, and frontier life. Writing as Harry Castlemon, he helped shape the style of boys' series fiction in the late 1800s.
