Set against the smoky river towns of the Civil War, the story follows Marcy Gray, a reluctant privateer who has just returned from a daring capture of the schooner Mary Hollins. While the town erupts in celebration, Marcy wrestles with the uneasy legality of his prize and the moral gray area of fighting for a cause he does not fully endorse. A letter from his zealous cousin Rodney stirs old loyalties, but a visit from the nervous former soldier Walter hints that treachery may lurk among familiar faces.
As Marcy settles back at his family home, he confronts the uneasy peace of a community divided between Union sympathies and Confederate pressures. The tension builds when whispered rumors of secret enemies and betrayals surface, forcing Marcy to decide who can truly be trusted. With his future as a blockade runner looming, he must balance duty, family, and the dangerous game of wartime espionage.

A hugely popular writer of adventure stories for young readers, he turned Civil War experience and a love of the outdoors into fast-moving tales of gunboats, camping, hunting, and frontier life. Writing as Harry Castlemon, he helped shape the style of boys' series fiction in the late 1800s.
