Frank watches the Union fleet roll into a conquered Vicksburg, his heart swelling with pride as the Stars and Stripes rise over the battered town. Eager to see the rebel stronghold up close, he helps re‑mount his ship’s battery and steps ashore, wandering streets scarred by cannon fire and discovering the hidden “gopher holes” where soldiers once ducked for safety. The thrill of victory mixes with the gritty reality of war‑torn buildings, giving him a vivid taste of the conflict’s human cost.
Soon transferred to the tin‑clad gunboat Boxer, Frank settles into a new crew and the everyday squabbles over rations and pay that keep life aboard lively. He quickly becomes a familiar, good‑natured presence among his fellow sailors, finding camaraderie in their jokes and grievances alike. As the river carries them toward fresh challenges farther downstream, Frank’s enthusiasm and sharp eye promise more daring exploits on the Mississippi’s turbulent waters.

A hugely popular writer of adventure stories for young readers, he turned Civil War experience and a love of the outdoors into fast-moving tales of gunboats, camping, hunting, and frontier life. Writing as Harry Castlemon, he helped shape the style of boys' series fiction in the late 1800s.
