Description

A restless teen named Frank watches the Civil War grind to a halt, his mind filled with newspaper headlines and the stories of brave soldiers who once fought under his grandfather’s flag. At home, his mother balances Puritan pride with a quiet worry, granting him the freedom to decide his own path. When his cousin Archibald writes begging for a shared enlistment, Frank feels the pull of duty stronger than ever.

The letter suggests the navy as a better fit—a chance to serve without the endless marches of the army, and to keep a piece of home aboard each vessel. Frank’s excitement grows as he imagines learning the ropes, handling the ironclad gun‑boat, and testing his mettle against the rebellion. The opening of the story captures his youthful resolve, the supportive family ties, and the anticipation of his first steps into a world of steam, powder, and daring exploits.

Harry Castlemon

1842–1915

A hugely popular writer of adventure stories for young readers, he turned Civil War experience and a love of the outdoors into fast-moving tales of gunboats, camping, hunting, and frontier life. Writing as Harry Castlemon, he helped shape the style of boys' series fiction in the late 1800s.
