About the author

Born in Berlin on March 1, 1837, Georg Moritz Ebers became a German Egyptologist, scholar, and novelist. He studied ancient Egyptian language and history and later taught at the University of Jena and the University of Leipzig.

Ebers is especially remembered for acquiring the Ebers Papyrus, an ancient Egyptian medical text dating to around 1550 BCE. He also transformed his knowledge of Egypt into popular historical fiction, including Uarda, Homo sum, Serapis, The Bride of the Nile, and Cleopatra.

His novels helped introduce archaeological discoveries and ancient Egyptian culture to a broad reading public. Ebers died in Tutzing, Bavaria, on August 7, 1898.
