Volume 3. - CHAPTER X.
In the sun‑blazed halls of a governor’s Egyptian estate, Paula—an educated Greek Christian—finds herself caught between two worlds. The household runs on a blend of Greek customs and Coptic whispers, and Paula’s role as a tutor to the governor’s young granddaughter, Mary, becomes her bridge to belonging. Yet every lesson she gives, every prayer she reads aloud, subtly challenges the rigid expectations of her host, Dame Neforis.
Paula’s gentle devotion to the child earns Mary’s fierce loyalty, but the grandmother sees the affection as a threat to her authority and to Mary’s religious upbringing. She stalls the lessons, appoints a Greek teacher, and insists that Mary stay away from Paula’s quarters, turning ordinary household routines into a subtle power struggle. As the morning sun climbs toward noon, the tension simmers, promising that the delicate balance of language, faith, and family ties will soon be tested.
