Description

The story opens in the sweltering summer of 643, when the once‑byzantine heart of Egypt has just slipped into the hands of the newly risen Arab caliphate. The Nile, usually a promise of abundance, recedes in a strange, bitter drought, and the ancient city of Memphis lies half‑ruined, its grand avenues now silent under a sky mottled with dust and heat.

Into this uneasy landscape arrives a small, well‑armed caravan from the north. At its head rides a gaunt, silk‑clad muzelman whose thin, bearded face is shadowed by a broad turban, yet his sharp eyes betray a calm intelligence. Beside him, a sturdy Egyptian guide on a sturdy donkey watches the leader with respectful curiosity, noting the way his disciplined followers obey every subtle command. The caravan’s appearance hints at hidden motives and promises of change, setting the stage for a clash of cultures and loyalties that will ripple through the desert and the river alike.
