Description

Through a tender recollection, the narrator transports us to his early years in a valley near Bordeaux, where an ancient chateau crowns verdant slopes and winding woods. The turret rooms overlook golden sunsets, while the seasons parade hawkers, cavalcades and the quiet rustle of forest game. In those days innocence colors every sight, and the landscape seems to echo simple joys of childhood. The prose lingers on the scent of violets and the slow rise of a young mind yearning for something beyond the walls.

Yet the boy is a dependent, the orphaned cousin of the castle’s lord, rescued by a wandering soldier of fortune who has taken him into his household. The soldier, both harsh and generous, offers the youth a glimpse of a life defined by arms, honor, and the call of adventure. As lessons in swordplay and strategy begin, Henry feels the stir of ambition mixed with the fear of an uncertain future. The stage is set for a journey that will test his courage, loyalty, and the notion of what it means to be a man at arms.
