Description

In the bustling world of mid‑nineteenth‑century London, the novel opens with a wistful tribute to the once‑great English merchant, whose blend of dignity and ambition still shapes the lives of a new generation. Humphrey Scriven, a well‑educated younger son of the country gentry, is thrust from a path toward the clergy into the mercantile arena after winning the heart of a wealthy merchant’s daughter. Accepting his father‑in‑law’s condition, he embraces the trade, quickly rising to become a respected partner and the heir to a thriving business. His success brings him a comfortable life in St. James’s Square, surrounded by the trappings of wealth and the company of society’s elite.

Within his elegant household live three sisters—each graceful and kind in her own way—and a fifteen‑year‑old son, a clever but indulgent boy whose upbringing leans heavily on material comfort. While Scriven’s daughters embody modesty, intellect, and gentle kindness, the young heir is being groomed to inherit the family counting‑house, though his education remains surprisingly neglected. This early tension between inherited privilege and the overlooked lessons of youth hints at the challenges that will test the family’s integrity and the very values they hold dear.
